THE HEARING ASSOCIATION HUTT VALLEY BRANCH INC

When we struggle all the time to hear what others are saying it's very easy to withdraw and become isolated and depressed. Don't let this happen or continue with you or a loved one – come and see what help is available. There's lots more can be done now than even a few decades ago. The Hearing Association Incorporated is a New Zealand wide non-profit organisation, working to help people with impaired hearing and prevent hearing loss through support, information, and educational services. Studies indicate treating hearing loss can help you stay well and experience an improved quality of life through better hearing and balance. We believe the journey to better hearing is a process. We hope that our services and educational resources improve your personal journey and/or the journey of a loved one. Anyone is welcome to use our services.

Donations for our work are appreciated. Tax deductible receipts will be issued for donations of $5.00 or more. Donations for our work entitle you to a tax refund of ⅓.

Funding Options NZ

From 1 July 2016 Enable New Zealand began managing the Hearing Aid Subsidy and the Hearing Aid Scheme for the New Zealand Ministry of Health. If you have a hearing loss, hearing aids may be part of the solution to improve your hearing. Depending on your circumstances and type of hearing loss, you may be able to get some help from the Ministry of Health towards the cost of buying hearing aids. Enable New Zealand manages all applications for hearing aids, hearing devices and the hearing aid subsidy. Enable New Zealand receives applications from assessors, and check these to ensure the assessor has considered the different support and hearing device options available. This is so any equipment you receive is suitable and the best for you.

Protect your ears in high risk situations such as environments where you have to shout to make yourself heard over background noise, or locations where noise hurts your ears or makes them ring, or situations where high sound levels make it difficult to hear properly afterwards.

Age is the biggest single cause of hearing loss. As most of us grow older, the daily wear and tear on our hearing systems gradually reduces their effectiveness. Most older people who experience hearing loss have a combination of both age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss.

Tinnitus is the condition in which one experiences sounds without the stimulus of an external noise source. Tinnitus is commonly referred to as a "ringing of the ears," but it is not necessarily always a ringing sound. The sound is personal and differs from person to person.

Fluid in the middle ear may be due to a blocked eustachian tube caused by a cold, sinus or respiratory infection. Normally, this tube lets fluid drain out of the middle ear. But sometimes the eustachian tube swells. It can become partially or completely blocked. This can cause fluid to build up in the middle ear.

After birth, a newborn baby's hearing is similar to that of an adult's, but babies must learn how to use their hearing to form the foundations of communication. They need to hear the sounds of their language repeatedly so they can associate sounds with words.

Do you have access to any hearing aids which you or a relative no longer use? We are looking at recalibrating used hearing aids for people who cannot afford new aids. The hearing aids that can be used for recalibrating are the ❛behind-the-ear❜ aids.

Since the AGM the new committee has met and decided our focus this year will be on promoting the recycled hearing aid scheme which we successfully piloted last year and reported on at the AGM. This is seen as a way of doing more for the community given our charity status. We are always looking for ways we can improve our services and benefits for members so please get in touch if you have suggestions. ~Annie
